Located in the Heart of England 4 miles southwest of Towcester, the ancient linear village of Wappenham has a small, friendly community with many attractive Listed properties built from local Helmdon stone or red brick.
Samuel Johnson famously said that when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life. There is an elegant red brick rectory next to St Marys Church which was designed for Samuel Johnson’s father by the renowned architect Sir Gilbert Scott. Sir Gilbert Scott also designed the village school, two houses, and a granary. In addition to his work as an architect, Scott was also a prolific writer and a passionate advocate for the preservation of historic buildings. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1877, which is still active today.
The beautiful St Mary’s Church in Wappenham is well worth a visit and has a very unusual one-handed clock dating to the Elizabethan era.
Back in the Middle Ages, Wappenham was a forest village subject to special laws and privileges and with direct connections to the king. Wappenham stood at the crossroads of England, with the Welsh Lane and Oxford Lane crossing at the top of the parish, Watling Street a few minutes ride away, and important roads to Brackley Buckingham and beyond skirting its sides.
Wappenham is well-situated for easy access to the M1 at junction 15a north of Towcester, the M40 junction 11 at Banbury, and Intercity rail services at Milton Keynes, making it a convenient location for commuters.
Wappenham also benefits from a good selection of nearby schools, including St Loys Primary Academy in Weedon Lois, Sponne School in Towcester. Private schools can be found at Akeley Wood, Winchester House, Brackley, and Stowe School.
